Ruth Greaves
Born 1963 in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal - South Africa

After matriculating at Cambridge College in Durban she studied fine art and drama at the University of Natal [Pietermaritzburg and Durban respectively]. She also studied fashion at Leggats Academy of Design and had a very successful career as a fashion designer.

Ruth designed and manufactured ladies and men’s fashion under the label ‘Ruth Greaves’ and supplied 42 stores locally and internationally including her own retail store in Johannesburg/Gauteng.

The fashion industry led her far and wide and she eventually landed up in London as a freelance designer and story board artist.

On returning to South Africa she began a career in the film industry as a wardrobe designer. The natural progression was to become an Art Director. What was unnatural was the pursuit of adrenalin sports…..which also led to a short spell in the stunt business.

In 1994 she moved to Cape Town and worked extensively on international commercials whilst painting commissioned art works for private clients and galleries.

As an artist and art director in the film industry, Ruth divides her time between painting and the film industry where she is constantly exposed to a myriad of artist expressions from all corners of the globe. “The film industry provides endless opportunities for me to draw on my formal artistic training and my intuitive instincts”.

Ruth has a combination of interests which include abstract expressionism and realism.

“Colour is the strongest vehicle of expression. I use oil on canvas. Bold intense colour embellished with metal leaf. I seldom use social or political tension as a backdrop for my artwork and do not depict aggression or hostility.”

“I am acutely aware of the marvels of nature and the purity of all creatures; it is a constant theme in my painting. The message is simple and direct. Colour, harmony, composition and glorification of nature .This was not a conscious decision, it just happened”.

“I look forward to growing and changing as an artist….shifted around by the ever present third force. I am never in a space that my mind is not conjuring, everything I see morphs a hundred times in minutes…constantly changing shape and colour. It is the curse of an artist. A curse I am blessed with”.
